Nutrient enrichment of the Nation’s water bodies continues to be a significant risk to human health and ecosystems. Our current management strategies for non-point source nutrient reductions are inadequate to protect and meet the expected increased future demands of water for consumption, recreation, and ecological integrity. Management of nutrient sources, loads and concentrations, within the context of changing sources and demands and expected impacts on social, economic and environmental systems continue to be challenging. Developing tools and conducting the required science to increase the adoption of nutrient management practices at multiple scales and across media (air, land, water) for improved water quality is critically important. The work presents the current stage of watershed models in nutrient simulation and potentials for future improvement.
In this presentation, nitrogen processes simulated in watershed models were reviewed and compared. Furthermore, current researches on nitrogen losses from agricultural fields were also reviewed. Finally, applications with those models were reviewed and selected successful and unsuccessful stories were described. The estimation of nitrogen loss at the watershed scale is a complex problem and nonpoint source pollution models need to be further improved and novel technology is still needed to integrate nutrient models with hydrological and erosion models
