Practical Implications from Observed Lead Pipe Scale Mineralogy in a Blended Phosphate Treated System

Citation:

Wasserstrom, L., M. Schock, AND S. Miller. Practical Implications from Observed Lead Pipe Scale Mineralogy in a Blended Phosphate Treated System. Presented at AWWA ACE 2015, Anaheim, CA, June 07 - 10, 2015.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation describes research results on mechanism of corrosion control observed for lead and galvanized pipe in a midwestern water system that uses blended phosphate for corrosion control treatment. The observations show that the mechanism is not what is commonly believed to be, and that additional water chemistry factors are involved that don't fit well in the current configuration of Optimum Water Quality Parameter limits under the Lead and Copper Rule.
