Description:

This talk supports the NGAM workshop and webinar seires and prepares for NGAM 2 The Next Generation Air Monitoring (NGAM) webinar and workshop series captures the revolution in air pollution measurement science enabled by rapid advances in sensors, communications, data integration, and geospatial modeling strategies. These events examine the spectrum of applications from industrial fencelines to personal air monitoring. The goal of the NGAM meeting series is to collaboratively inform and stimulate concepts in low cost, highly portable sensors for use by citizens, community groups, schools, researchers, government agencies, and industries interested in issues ranging from science education and air pollution exposure to improved industrial work practices. September 6th, 2012 (1-4 p.m.) – EPA NGAM Webinar – RTP, NC The NGAM webinars bridge between the topic-specific workshops in the series severing to summarize and communicate preceding events and to prepare and provide context for the following workshops. The first NGAM webinar will tie together the outputs from the NGAM Workshop #1 Apps and Sensors for Air Pollution (ASAP), which began the exploration of low cost sensors in community applications, the Technology Market Summit, which examined the finance and marketing needs related to fenceline and sensor technologies, and two recently completed literature searches focused on next generation air monitoring. The webinar will present the synthesis of the state of the technology in two areas based upon these literature searches: current and emerging fenceline monitors for air pollutants and emerging mobile air pollutant sensor systems. This webinar will also provide context for the material presented and discussed at NGAM #2 and serve to gather input from the regions on important topic areas for discussion. All those attending the NGAM series are encouraged to participate in this interactive webinar – webinar details are forthcoming. November 6 and 7, 2012 – EPA NGAM II Workshop – RTP, NC The Regional NGAM Workshop #2 will focus on the needs and opportunities for the EPA regions in near-source and fenceline measurements of air toxics and criteria pollutants while setting the stage for ongoing discussions on lower cost ambient and personal exposure measures. In addition to summarizing the needs of the Regions, presentations will be given by invited technology experts and by EPA OAR on the nexus of measurements and policy. The workshop will include breakout sessions to engage the participants on subject matter and to facilitate deeper understanding of current measurement technologies and the road to improved instrumentation for air toxics and criteria pollutants monitoring. The workshop will foster interaction between EPA Regions, ORD, OAR, and OECA, to discuss ways to work together to bring promising technologies and methods fruition in the most efficient manner. The workshop will be available for groups wishing to participate remotely – details are forthcoming. Please note that November 6th is Election Day. If you are travelling to this meeting please remember to use early voting or fill out an absentee ballot. Proposed Topics: • Understand the monitoring needs of the EPA Regions • Explore the state-of-the art and future development trajectories for lower cost, continuous instruments for monitoring air toxics and criteria pollutants • Discuss opportunities enabled by emerging measurement technologies • Breakout sessions o Near-source and fenceline measurements o Prioritizing species and measurement applications o Data utility, Apps, model/monitor hybrids, special QA needs o Facilitating innovation – overcoming roadblocks and identifying collaboration opportunities
