Citation:

Purucker, Tom. Ubertool: Web Application for Ecological Risk Assessment of Pesticides. Presented at Kavli Frontiers of Science, Chinese-American Symposium, Beijing, CHINA, October 13 - 16, 2014.

Impact/Purpose:

Presented at the Kavli Frontiers of Science, Chinese-American Symposium in Beijing China, 10/13/2014.

Description:

Under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must regulate (license) pesticides before they become commercially available to ensure they will not cause unreasonable adverse effects on human health or the environment. The Food Quality Act of 1996 furthers this regulatory authority to include the periodic reassessment of pesticides, allowing for changes in policy and risk assessment science to apply to currently licensed pesticides. A series of models have been developed to assess the fate and transport of pesticides as part of the EPA’s regulatory process. These models are in various formats including Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, FORTRAN 95 executables, and Visual Basic GUIs. The disparate formats of the models makes it cumbersome to share their data between the models and impedes on the transparency of the pesticide regulation process.
