SCREENING INFORMATION DATA SETS (SIDS)

Description:

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is jointly investigating international high production volume (HPV) chemicals. These HPV chemicals are defined as chemicals produced in one OECD Member country in quantities above10,000 metric tons (22 million lbs) per annum or above 1,000 metric tons (2.2 million lbs) in two or more OECD countries. The Screening Information Data Sets (SIDS) Program involves OECD countries collecting existing information and conducting tests on the allocated HPV chemicals following the protocol agreed upon by OECD. Member countries then prepare dossiers and initial assessment reports for the HPV chemicals. In order to increase public access to chemical information, the Environmental Protection Agencys Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) began a pilot project using image processing technology to convert the original hard copy documents developed under the SIDS Program into electronic format. Each document is reproduced from the best copy submitted to EPA by the OECD country. EPA has not edited the original text nor corrected any typographical errors on the original documents. As chemicals complete the OECD review process, OPPT conducts a separate review(known as a Risk Management 1 (RM1) review) for those chemicals that are HPV chemicals in the U.S. This separate review provides value added use/exposure and risk management information as it relates to the interests of the U.S. These documents are published with the SIDS documents on the EPA Server.
