Meta-Abstract for the EnviroAtlas Poster Block at the 2013 ESRI International User Conference (7/12/13). Presented at 2013 ESRI International User Conference, San Diego, CA, July 08 - 12, 2013.

Impact/Purpose:

Prior to the public release of EnviroAtlas in September, 2013, the team is exhibiting a range of graphical examples at the International ESRI User Conference. A block of 15 posters, uniform in design, will demonstrate some of the data and tools available within EnviroAtlas. In particular it will showcase innovative metric development as well as the application of select metrics to the public-health and transportation sectors.

Description:

The EPA is launching a web-based mapping application—EnviroAtlas—which is designed to communicate ecosystem services, their drivers, societal benefits, and potential future status in a user-friendly manner. EnviroAtlas includes a coarse-scale national component, with data summarized to the watershed (12-digit HUC) level for the conterminous United States, and a much finer-scale urban component, with data summarized to the Census block-group level for selected communities. Through maps, text, and analysis tools, EnviroAtlas illustrates the variety of ways that the natural environment can support human health and wellbeing. The featured ecosystem services are: Clean air; Clean & plentiful water; Food, fuel & materials; Recreation, culture & aesthetic amenities; Climate stabilization (e.g. carbon storage to offset greenhouse gases); Natural hazard mitigation; and Biodiversity conservation. EnviroAtlas is designed to inform decision alternatives in management sectors including transportation, public health, water supply, recreation, and environmental conservation, as well as serving information needs of scientists, students, and concerned citizens.
