LIGHTING FOR READING: DESIGNING AN LED LUMINAIRE FOR HOMES AND OFFICES
Impact/Purpose:
To develop a selection of luminaires suitable to either residential or commercial
environments.
Description:
Energy waste from traditional incandescent light bulbs was reduced by fluorescent lamps, but they pose a threat to the environment due to the mercury in each tube and disposal issues. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) provide superior energy efficiency, longer life, toxin-free components, and low cost, but the ability of the technology to totally replace incandescent and fluorescent light sources is yet to be fully realized. Addressing innovative green building initiatives, this project takes one step, designing LED lighting to be used for reading in the home and office setting.
