Citation:

Selvakumar, A. AND S. Vallabhaneni. Advances in Sewer Condition and Capacity Assessment – Development and Applications of EPA SSOAP Toolbox. Presented at JSWA/WEF Conference, Kobe, JAPAN, July 26 - 27, 2012.

Impact/Purpose:

To assist communities with sanitary sewer evaluations and in developing mitigation plans.

Description:

In the United States, sanitary sewer infrastructure is aging, with some sewers dating back over 100 years. Nationwide, there are more than 19,500 municipal sanitary-sewer collection systems serving an estimated 150 million people and about 40,000 sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) events per year. Aging water infrastructure is currently one of the top national water program priorities, and is a top priority of the United States Conference of Mayors (Washington, D.C.). Rainfall-derived infiltration and inflow (RDII) into sanitary sewer systems has long been recognized in many sewer systems as a major cause of poor performance and operating problems, including SSOs.
