Greener Biomimetic Approach to the Synthesis of Nanomaterials and Sustainable Applications of Nano-Catalysts

Citation:

VARMA, R. S. Greener Biomimetic Approach to the Synthesis of Nanomaterials and Sustainable Applications of Nano-Catalysts. Presented at the 12th International Conference, Environmentally Friendly Nanotechnologies for Industry, Kazan, RUSSIA, November 30 - December 02, 2011.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform EPA

Description:

The generation of engineered nanomaterials represents a major breakthrough in material science and nanotechnology-based materials. These products have moved beyond the laboratory setting to the ‘real world’. More than 1000 of such products are currently on the market (www.nanotechproject.org) of which a large majority are incorporated in everyday personal care products, cosmetics and clothing. The developments of new consumer products are expected to impact almost every industrial and manufacturing sector, including medicine and drug delivery. It is anticipated that commercialization of nanomaterials and nano-assisted devices will grow into a $1 trillion industry1 by 2015. It is needless to emphasize that the successful commercialization of this disruptive technology is important for varied applications to humans and global growth, but serious attention is needed for the assessment of potential health and environmental impacts of these materials.
