This presentation provides specific background on lead and copper corrosion control chemistry and strategies, and integrates it with other important distribution system corrosion control objectives. Topics covered include: driving force for corrosion (oxidants); impacts of oxidants on metal corrosion and mobility; necessity to include corrosion control of distribution system mains; finding lead and copper problems through proper sampling; specific chemistry treatment strategies for lead and copper that work; “myths” of stagnation behavior of lead and copper; complications and inhibitions to successful treatment (such as dissimilar pipe surface coatings or overdosing of polyphosphates); and preventing destabilization of corrosion products and deposits on pipe surfaces.
