Best Practices and Simultaneous Compliance

Citation:

SCHOCK, M. R. Best Practices and Simultaneous Compliance. Presented at New York State AWWA Special Pre-Symposium Seminar - Corrosion in Water Distribution Systems, Liverpool, NY, September 19, 2011.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

This wrap-up presentation to the workshop covers several topics concerning how lead and copper compliance under the Lead and Copper Rule should be integrated into an overall “simultaneous compliance” framework with other organizations. The LCR requires “optimization” of lead levels, which essentially can’t be done simultaneously with minimizing copper levels. However, the Action Level for copper can be achieved, as well as compliance with other disinfection, disinfection byproduct, inorganic and radionuclide SDWA regulations, if the proper treatment approaches are followed. This presentation describes the potential adverse interactions with various treatment process for other regulated contaminants, and how optimization for lead can be achieved. It also covers the substantial benefits of truly optimized corrosion control to water quality and environmental impacts beyond just focusing on the Lead and Copper Rule.
