Description:
Sustainability has been discussed for many years, with no consensus on how to ensure that environmental sustainability is reached or even that progress is made in the right direction. The Brundtland Commission statement that sustainability “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs [1]” provides the focus of sustainability on future human generations. The author proposes impact assessment models can be used to provide a consistent direction toward increasing environmental sustainability. In some cases, the impact assessment models already exist for categories such as ozone depletion and global climate change, in other cases, such as land use and resource depletion, additional research is necessary to make the models scientifically valid and practical.
