Microwave-assisted 'greener' synthesis of organics and nanomaterials

Citation:

VARMA, R. S. Microwave-assisted 'greener' synthesis of organics and nanomaterials. Presented at Pacifichem 2010 (International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies), Honolulu, HI, December 15 - 20, 2010.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

Microwave selective heating techniques in conjunction with greener reaction media are dramatically reducing chemical waste and reaction times in several organic transformations and material synthesis. This presentation summarizes author’s own experience in developing MW-assisted chemical processes, which involve various benign alternatives, such as the use of greener reaction medium in aqueous or solvent-free conditions. The synthesis of heterocyclic compounds, coupling reactions, and eco-friendly generation of nanomaterials and nanocomposites with a variety of renewable and biodegradable polymers will be described.
