Distribution System Nitrification 101 - slides
Impact/Purpose:
To inform the public.
Description:
As a result of the implementation of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproduct Rules, chloramine use as a secondary disinfectant in the United States is predicted to increase significantly. Along with the addition of chloramine comes the risk of nitrification in the distribution system. Nitrification in drinking water distribution systems is undesirable and may result in degradation of water quality and subsequent non-compliance with existing regulations. This presentation will provide an overview of nitrification, the operational aspects of managing nitrification, and the ongoing nitrification research at USEPA.
