New species of Eunotia from small isolated wetlands in Florida

Citation:

Manoylov, K., R. Stevenson, AND C. R. LANE. New species of Eunotia from small isolated wetlands in Florida. Presented at International Society for Diatom Research 21st Annual Symposium, St. Cloud, MN, August 29 - September 03, 2010.

Impact/Purpose:

Small forested and herbaceous isolated Florida wetlands were sampled in reference, agricultural and urban settings. Chlorophyll-a, AFDM and diatom composition wee assed. Changes in biomass, biodiversity, richness and evenness were compare between reference, agricultural and urban wetlands within forested and marsh wetland areas. Reference wetlands from both forested and marsh areas had lower biomass compared to agricultural wetlands in the forested areas. Three hundred two (302) diatom species were observed and 14% of those species are potentially new to science including the proposed new species of Eunotia. Besides detailed morphological analyses at the LM and SEM levels, a comparison with similar taxa from the literature revealed important morphological characters, potentially adaptive for species inhabiting this complex habitat. Ecology of diatoms from acidic environments is discussed.

Description:

Diatom species composition of small wetlands is diverse and unique due to a plethora of spatial and temporal variables. Diatoms from small wetlands can contribute greatly to better understanding microbial biodiversity, distribution, dispersal and populations.
