Description:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been conducting drinking water research for over 35 years. The EPA Office of Research and Development(ORD)provides scientific information to the Agency for policy and regulatory development related to implementation of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). A majority of SDWA violations occur in small communities in the United States. ORD small drinking water system research focuses on low-cost options to improve treatment system water quality and compliance in small communities. ORD engineers and scientists collaborate with the water industry in the development of treatment technologies that comply with EPA regulations. Innovative treatment technologies are being designed and tested to benefit developing countries and for emergency response after natural disasters. Many small community water utilities fail to meet SDWA monitoring and reporting requirements. Efforts are underway to develop energy-efficient treatment technologies with monitoring and control systems for remote areas. This paper summarizes EPA research on water supply treatment technologies used in small communities in the U.S. and that are applicable throughout the world. Research on emerging and innovative technologies, low-cost package plants for remote locations, and treatment devices for households and small businesses are highlighted in relation to SDWA regulatory compliance.
