Description:
Hydrogen peroxide is a common oxidant that has been applied extensively with in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO). Because of its widespread use in this and other fields, it has been extensively researched. This research has revealed that hydrogen peroxide has very complex chemistry, involving free radicals and other reaction mechanisms, and is still an active field of research. The chapter describes the fundamentals of hydrogen peroxide chemistry, its catalysis to form free radicals, the reaction mechanisms involved with its chemistry, and the degradability of contaminants of concern. Much of the present body of knowledge regarding hydrogen peroxide has focused on its chemistry while relatively little work has focused on its subsurface transport.
