Description:

The national water quality inventory has assessed 40% of waters failing to meet designated use (fishable/swimmable); stormwater runoff pollution leading source of impairment; and common stressors are pathogens, nutrients, ss/sediments, toxics and emerging contaminants, flow, oxygen-depleting substances. Major sources of contaminants are urban uses, vehicular activities, industrial and commercial activities – metals and chemicals, construction products and activities – silt, sediment, erosion, toxicants, agricultural activities – pesticides, fertilizers, animal feeding operations, septic systems and cesspools, landfills and surface impoundments, and leaking storage tanks.
