The Importance of Soil Protein Fate to PIP Crop Registration

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public

Description:

Plant Incorporated Protectant (PIP) crops are registered under the authority of the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and as part of this registration certain environmental fate information is required to properly judge the environmental compatibility of new trait constructs for various crops. The proper analysis of this concern begins with the evaluations of information relating to the stability of biochemicals released by the plant system into the environment. Clear, precise, and accurate analytical information is required to answer the fundamental questions implied in this evaluation. Extension of the analysis to the environmental fate (soil, water and other media) requires robust analytical practices that properly sample the environmental media to provide the necessary information. Examples of past registration decisions in this topic will be discussed.
