Toward Sustainable Land-Use: The Planning of Stella, Missouri

Citation:

HANSEN, V. E. Toward Sustainable Land-Use: The Planning of Stella, Missouri. Presented at Sigma Xi, AWBERC, Cincinnati, OH, February 25, 2009.

Impact/Purpose:

To address how these preconditions of intact natural systems were established, and to illustrate how these preconditions were applied to planning the village of Stella, Missouri.

Description:

Human life relies upon goods and services that ecosystems provide. If we want these systems to sustain future generations, the limitation to how much of the environment can be consumed to meet human needs is how much must remain to meet human needs. This concept establishes a basic conditional relationship between humanity and the environment that directs the physical form of the built environment. Because planning is the way people meet objectives within conditions, it is possible to use the preconditions for keeping natural systems intact as planning criteria for creating the built environment. This presentation will address how these preconditions of intact natural systems were established and illustrate how they were applied to planning the village of Stella, Missouri.
