The Impact of Hexametaphosphate, Orthophosphate, and Temperature on Copper Corrosion and Release

Citation:

O'Donnell, A. AND D. A. LYTLE. The Impact of Hexametaphosphate, Orthophosphate, and Temperature on Copper Corrosion and Release. Presented at AWWA Water Quality and Technology Conference and Exposition, Cincinnati, OH, November 16 - 20, 2008.

Impact/Purpose:

To share Information

Description:

Excessive corrosion of copper plumbing can lead to elevated copper levels at consumer’s tap or pinhole leaks. Corrosion control solutions include pH adjustment or phosphate addition. Orthophosphate has been shown to reduce copper levels in some cases while the role of polyphosphate is less understood.
