Overview On Alternative Asbestos Control Method Research - Wisconsin Dells

Notice:

In 2006 and 2007 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted three tests to examine the cost and environmental effectiveness of the Alternative Asbestos Control Method (AACM). Two tests were conducted in Fort Chafee, Arkansas and one was conducted in Fort Worth, Texas. The EPA discontinued testing the AACM due to technical deficiencies. The AACM remains unapproved and should not be used.

Impact/Purpose:

To describe the results of the three field demonstrations of the AACM.

Description:

The alternative asbestos control method (AACM) is an experimental approach to building demolition. Unlike the NESHAP method, the AACM allows some regulated asbestos containing material to remain in the building and a surfactant-water solution is used to suppress asbestos fibers from becoming airborne. AACM requires removal of soil following demolition as well as proper water disposal. This presentation describes the results of three field demonstrations of the AACM. This abstract and presentation are based, at least in part, on preliminary data and conclusions. The Alternative Asbestos Control Method is not approved for use in lieu of the Asbestos NESHAP.
