Description:

Computers, imaging technologies, and the worldwide web have assumed an important role in augmenting traditional learning. Resources to disseminate multimedia information across platforms, and the emergence of communal knowledge environments, facilitate the visualization of difficult concepts in embryology and integration of knowledge. For example, computer animations and 3D reconstruction of image arrays collected from human embryos in the Carnegie Collection, and resources to connect 3D spatio-temporal models with reference data to construct cellular and molecular networks in mouse embryos, are emerging tools that promote collaboration and scholarship through open exchange of peer-reviewed educational materials. Web sites holding peer-reviewed, descriptive information about published teaching resources including tutorials, virtual patients, cases, lab manuals, assessment instruments, and faculty development materials, are available to the general public with instructions on how these materials may be accessed or obtained for free or at a nominal cost. Growing use of the internet for teaching embryology requires adoption of best-practices with respect to copyright issues and air-use policy.

Purpose/Objective:

Computers, imaging technologies, and the worldwide web have assumed an important role in augmenting traditional learning in medicine, including embryology and clinical teratology. With the emergence of web-based resources to disseminate multimedia information across platforms, and the emergence of community-supported knowledge environments, techniques are available to facilitate the visualization of difficult concepts in embryology and to integrate complex information for research and teaching purposes.
