Description:

This presentation consists of introductory slides on ecosystem services in urban landscapes and then a discussion of two case studies concerning the provision of water quality in urban landscapes. The introductory slides will explore the range of ecosystem services provided by urban landscapes. This discussion will explore differences in ecosystem service provision across a range of urban land cover/land uses and scales and how ecological design can promote enhanced provision of ecosystem services. The first case study will discuss how forested wetlands in urban northeastern New Jersey may not in all cases provide the expected service of nitrate removal due to altered hydrology caused by stormwater management practices; this research was conducted as part of my dissertation work at Rutgers University. The second case study will explore how rain gardens can be used to mitigate peak flows associated with stormwater runoff and how soil media enhancements to promote higher levels of nitrate removal will be tested at NRMRL’s Urban Watershed Research Facility in Edison, NJ.
