Planning Sustainability: A Master Plan For Stella, Missouri

Citation:

HANSEN, V. E. Planning Sustainability: A Master Plan For Stella, Missouri. Presented at Vita Nuova Sustainability Webinar Series, On-line Presentation, Cincinnati, OH, May 30, 2008.

Impact/Purpose:

To illustrate the application of the planning strategy to a master plan to develop Stella, Missouri, so as to be socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable.

Description:

Human Life is conditional upon intact ecosystems that provide goods and services required to sustain human life. Because development will incrementally and cumulative consume the biophysical environment, the conditions of intact ecosystems must be the basis for how the environment is used. Because planning strategies offer a tool to meet objectives within conditions, this tool offers the ability to intentionally plan to meet sustainability. This presentation illustrates the application of this planning strategy to a master plan to develop the community of Stella, Missouri, so as to be socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable. It also gives examples of how development to meet this plan might be implemented. The measure of this plan's success will be the community's ability to meet its needs, endure over time, and evolve in place.
