Citation:

VEGA, A. M. AND M. Hauschild. The U.S.-German Bilateral Working Group (BGW): Collaborative Research For A Sustainable Future. Presented at Brownfields 2008: Roadmap to Revitalization, Detroit, MI, May 05 - 07, 2008.

Impact/Purpose:

To work bilaterally to identify, understand and apply innovative technologies and policies for remediation and sustainable revitalization of contaminated sites in the United States and Germany.

Description:

Since 1990, the United States and Germany have worked bilaterally to identify, understand, and apply innovative technologies and policies for remediation and sustainable revitalization of contaminated sites in each country. Over a period of 15 years (= three Phases) remarkable benefits were realized in both countries. Cities in the U.S., such as New York City, Chicago, and Buffalo are applying redevelopment strategies from Germany's Ruhr Valley. Washington, DC is applying "green" roof and low-impact development stormwater systems from Stuttgart to redevelop its brownfields. In 2006, cooperation between Germany and the U.S. entered a new phase of collaboration - Phase 4. Phase 4 of the partnership will focus on long-term holistic solutions for sustainable land management. Regional infrastructure and transboundary management, financial management, brownscape design and cross-cutting themes, will be the focus of continued collaborative research and development and technology transfer.
