Description:

Determining reference conditions for large and great rivers like the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio Rivers is difficult because there are few, if any, reaches in minimally disturbed condition. In this paper, we describe a method for determining internal reference conditions using an abiotic stressor gradient. This information will be useful to river biologists and managers working to develop approaches to large river bioassessment. The approached described herein will be the basis of the EMAP-GRE assessment. Aspects of our approach will likely be adapted to other river monitoring programs.
