KENTULA, M. E. AND V. D. ENGLE. Next steps for the National Wetlands Condition Assessment. Presented at Society of Wetland Scientists Annual International Meeting, Washington, DC, May 26 - 30, 2008.

Impact/Purpose:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) anticipates conducting a national survey of wetland condition, with field work scheduled for 2011 and a report in 2013.

Description:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) anticipates conducting a national survey of wetland condition, with field work scheduled for 2011 and a report in 2013. This session has presented various aspects of the planning for the survey and examples of surveys that have or will be conducted prior to the national survey. One of the key aspects of this effort is the collaboration between EPA and US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). The collaboration will ensure that the National Wetland Condition Assessment effectively complements the U.S. FWS’s Status and Trends report. The agencies will work together to offer scientifically defensible information on the current status of wetland quantity and quality in the United States. In 2008, EPA is hoping to finalize decisions regarding indicators, reference condition, and assessment methods. This session and the discussion it generates will provide valuable technical feedback on decisions that have already been made and insights on decisions to come.
