Description:

A number of pesticide application technologies offer the potential to reduce spray drift from pesticide applications. However, limited information exists on their effectiveness in reducing spray drift. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is taking initiatives that can lead to the verification of the effectiveness of drift reduction technologies (DRTs) using a recently developed test protocol. Tested technologies that are proven to significantly reduce spray drift can be considered in EPA's risk assessment and management decisions for its registration of pesticides. Pesticide product labels citing use of DRTs can have reduced restrictions for applications, provide applicators with greater flexibility, and result in less off-target pesticide deposition. EPA is also seeking opportunities to share its verification approach and collaborate with other countries. International collaboration and compatibility of DRT verification programs is expected to create a greater market incentive for developing and testing innovative and effective DRTs.
