Impact/Purpose:
The objectives of this work were to 1) Develop a protocol to apply fluorescently-labeled antibodies to water samples to detect virulent serovars of Leptospira, 2) Develop a protocol to isolate Leptospira spirochetes from water samples and 3) Utilize these techniques to assess the occurrence of Leptospira in recreational waters in watersheds on Oahu and Kauai, in the Hawaiian Islands.
