Description:

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are ubiquitous protozoan that are predominantly harmless to humans. There are a few genera that cause disease in humans, Balamuthia, Naegleria, and Acanthamoeba. These organisms are not easily removed by physical means or inactivated by chemical disinfectants. They have relatively high cT values, in the range of Giardia cysts. More research needs to be conducted on the removal and inactivation of FLA.
