SMITH, J. E. UPDATE ON PEC ACTIVITIES INCLUDING NEW EVALUATION CRITERIA, THE APPLICATION COMPLETENESS CHECKLIST, AND STATUS OF THE WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT. Presented at 8th Annual National Biosolids Conference/Workshop, Bolger Center for Leadership Development, Potomac, MD, October 08 - 11, 2007.

Impact/Purpose:

to present information

Description:

US EPA's Pathogen Equivalency Committee (PEC) has updated the evaluation criteria it uses to make recommendations of equivalency (to processes acceptable under 40CFR503) on innovative or alternative sludge pathogen reduction processes. These criteria will be presented along with a discussion of the stressors, including temperature, solids concentration, ammonia, pressure, and pH, that are often employed to assist with disinfection. To help new applicants through the evaluation process the PEC is making available to applicants a website. This website clearly presents the criteria used for equivalency and provides guidance for developing the proper test procedures and documentation. As the applicant moves through the necessary steps on the website to demonstrate the effectivenss of his or her process, graphics and text explain the process and make available by downloading helpful documents. Processes currently under evaluation by the PEC are discussed and include vermicomposting; treating sludge with chlorine dioxide and nitrous acid; with lime and sulfamic acid; with sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide; or with a fumigant, Rid-a-Vec, which converts to methyl isothiocyanate for the kill of pathogens.
