Description:

This data set includes analytical results for measurements of metals in 49 field control samples (spikes). Measurements were made for up to 11 metals in samples of water, blood, and urine. Field controls were used to assess recovery of target analytes from a sample media during storage, shipment, processing, and analysis. Field controls were prepared by fortifying a suitable background-free matrix identical or similar to the sample being collected. Controls were prepared in the labs and shipped to the field site. They were then returned along with the samples. Field controls were used for some sample media, with the controls deployed for a small percentage of the study participants. In several cases where there may not have been suitable media or means of fortification, field controls were not collected. Keywords: metals; quality assurance; field control; spike.

The National Human Exposure Assessment Survey (NHEXAS) is a federal interagency research effort coordinated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD). Phase I consists of demonstration/scoping studies using probability-based sampling designs. The Region 5 study was conducted in EPA's Region 5 (Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota), and included personal exposure, residential concentration, and biomarker measurements of metals and VOCs. The study was conducted by the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) and the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI).
