Description:

Abstract: Environmental Health Indicators are quantitative measures of important environmental health factors that can be used to identify specific areas and populations for intervention and prevention efforts and to evaluate the outcomes of implemented policies or programs for improving environmental public health. Numerous specialized indicator efforts currently exist that address a spectrum of spatial scales and related decision-making needs. Regardless of intended application, all these indicator efforts require valid and relevant epidemiologic data and information. Finding, retrieving, and analyzing the right data to support indicators at the appropriate spatial scale for specific decision-making purposes is a common challenge underlying all of these efforts.

This symposium will showcase several ongoing health indicator programs at global, national and local levels, focusing on their purpose and various methodological obstacles to developing valid and informative measures. WHO's Global Initiative on Children's Environmental Health Indicators (CEHI) and Children's Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe (CEHAPE), the U.S.-Mexico Border Environmental Program, U.S. EPA's Report on the Environment (ROE) 2007, America's Children and the Environment (ACE), and the State Environmental Health Indicators Collaborative (SEHIC) will be featured. Panel and audience discussions will focus on the identified methodological challenges, specific strategies used to address gaps in desired data and information, and consideration of how chosen strategies may impede an indicator's ability to provide the necessary information for specific decision-making purposes.
