Description:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) entered into a Bilateral partnership in 1990 to study each country's efforts in developing and demonstrating innovative tools, techniques and approaches in areas related to contaminated land. The overall objective of the Bilateral is for each partner country to gain a comprehensive understanding of the other's tools, techniques and approaches, to evaluate their effectiveness and finally transfer information when appropriate. The bilateral working group efforts are being implemented in a phased approach. During the first two phases, innovative treatment technology demonstrations in each country were the focus. In 2000, the U. S. and Germany entered into a third phase of the Bilateral partnership to focus on an integrated approach to redeveloping contaminated sites. The U.S.-German Bilateral Working Group recently completed this third phase and is entering into Phase 4. Phase 4 will focus on sustainable land revitalization. The U.S.-German Bilateral Working Group has organized a variety of technical meetings and workshops, and has developed several products and a decision support tool. This presentation will fIrst describe and discuss the history of the US-German Bilateral Working Group and second provide an overview of the jointly developed products in Phase 3.
