Impact/Purpose:
The objectives of this task are to continuously develop and improve the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system, which is the science implementation within the Models-3 system framework for air quality simulation. CMAQ is a multiscale and multi-pollutant chemistry-transport model (CTM) that includes the necessary critical science process modules for atmospheric transport, deposition, cloud mixing, emissions, gas- and aqueous-phase chemical transformation processes, and aerosol dynamics and chemistry. It relies on Models-3 I/O API to support machine independent data access and maintains simple interfaces among science processor modules to provide a high-level of modularity.
Description:
This task supports ORD's strategy by providing responsive technical support of EPA's mission and provides credible state of the art air quality models and guidance. This research effort is to develop and improve the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system, a multiscale and multi-pollutant chemistry-transport model (CTM). Specific research components include: evolvement of science in the CMAQ modeling system, generalized coordinate system: matching met/CTM multi-scaling capabilities, plume-in-grid approach, atmospheric modeling of PM at neighborhood scales, chemical mechanism reader and solvers, fluid modeling simulations of subgrid scale phenomena, "one-atmosphere" modeling framework (Models-3), and EBM/OBM modeling framework.
This task utilizes high performance computing and scientific visualization resources provided by EPA's National Environmental Scientific Computing Center (NESC2).

Relevance :There is a need for a common work environment for comprehensive air quality modeling. As our knowledge on the environment improves, the linkage of natural processes will be diversified. Because no one group of scientists can have expertise in all required diverse air quality science areas, we promote a community modeling paradigm. A common modeling framework will change the modeling culture by making modelers more open and collaborative and allowing verification of modeling results by other scientists. Air quality model users demand that multi- pollutants and multiscale modeling should be done within one system. Models must be designed with highly modular characteristics that permit major process components to be "plugged in" and readily exercised, because the science of many key processes is constantly improving and there are many alternative physical/chemical parameterization's that need to be tested. The system also needs sound diagnostic tools as well as analysis and visualization components.
