Description:

An extremely simple single-step method is described for the bulk synthesis of nanofibers of the electronic polymer polyaniline in fully reduced state (leucoemarldine form) without using any reducing agents, surfactants, and/or large amounts of insoluble templates. Chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline with acetic acid instead of HCI (conventional synthesis) dramatically changes the morphology of the resulting doped polyaniline powder from nonfibrillar (particulate) to almost exclusively nanofibers of reduced leucoemarldine state in the diameter range 10 nm to 50 nm depending on the acetic acid concentration. The ensuing nanofibers have better thermal stability and broad decomposition temperature by order of at least 120-150 °C when compared to earlier reported preparation of reduced polyaniline.
