SAMPLE COLLECTION AND HANDLING FOR MICROBIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF BIOSOLIDS

Citation:

MECKES, M. C. SAMPLE COLLECTION AND HANDLING FOR MICROBIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF BIOSOLIDS. Presented at WERF Biosolids Sampling and Handling Methods Workshop at WEFTEC'05, Washington, DC, October 30, 2005.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

The objective of this presentation is to discuss sample collection and handling methods currently in use for detection and enumeration of microorganisms in biosolids and municipal wastewater sludges. Untreated sludges and biosolids are rarely homogeneous and present a challenge for all who seek to collect “representative” samples. This presentation discusses current approaches used for sample collection to obtain representative samples of materials destined for beneficial use or ultimate disposal. Emphasis will be placed on obtaining samples which are representative of biosolids products and those which will not present handling problems in the laboratory. The differences in handling samples for bacteria, virus and parasite analysis will also be addressed
