HUTCHINS, S. R. AND R. T. WILKIN. GWERD MONITORING OF PRB PERFORMANCE AT CIMARRON PORK FIELD SITE - UPDATE 2005. Presented at Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Oklahoma City, OK, August 03, 2005.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

GWERD personnel have been invited to help evaluate the performance of a carbon-based permeable reactive barrier (PRB) that was constructed for in-situ bioremediation of a ground water nitrate plume caused by leakage from a swine CAFO lagoon. Research activities to date have involved extensive site characterization and construction of monitoring well transects adjacent to and across the PRB, as well as quarterly monitoring for the past year. In addition to standard monitoring wells, cluster wells and discrete multi-level samplers (DMLS) are being used to provide vertical resolution of processes occurring throughout the PRB. Results to date show that the PRB is indeed functioning to promote denitrification throughout the barrier, although intermittent ammonium production and/or release still occurs within the barrier matrix. Continued monitoring is required to determine whether the barrier will provide enough organic carbon to account for the total influx mass of nitrate based on upgradient nitrification of sorbed ammonium.
