IMPACTS OF DNAPL SOURCE TREATMENT: OVERVIEW OF GWERD RESEARCH

Citation:

WOOD, A. L. AND M. BROOKS. IMPACTS OF DNAPL SOURCE TREATMENT: OVERVIEW OF GWERD RESEARCH . Presented at EPA Ground Water Forum, Phoenix, AZ, May 24, 2005.

Description:

The Ground Water and Ecosystems Restoration Division (GWERD) is conducting research to evaluate the benefits derived from aggressive DNAPL source treatment. It is assumed that contaminant mass flux from the source zone can be used to estimate the performance of applied remedial technologies. Mass fluxes are being monitored downgradient to treated DNAPL sources at four field sites. A reduction in contaminant discharge from the source zone is expected to result in a change in the dissolved plume. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the GWERD DNAPL research objectives, flux monitoring techniques, preliminary field results and an analytical approach for evaluating changes in a plume following DNAPL mass is depleted.
