ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS OF SPECTRAL IMAGING

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

The utility of remote sensing using spectral imaging is just being realized through the investigation to a wide variety of environmental issues. Improved spectral and spatial resolution is very important to the detection of effects once regarded as unobservable. A current research area of the EPA is the application of this technology to the monitoring of transgenic crops that encompass land areas of millions of acres. The regulatory requirements for these crops involve a stewardship program for the development of pest resistance to the crop. The research program is envisioned to provide an early-warning resistance detection component to existing monitoring efforts for these crops.
