Description:

In northern Kazakhstan, there is a serious case of mercury pollution near Pavlodar City from an old mercury cell chlor-alkali plant. The soil, sediment, and water are contaminated with more than a thousand tons of mercury and mercury compounds as a result of the operation of the chemical plant. For several years, the European Commission as well as the U.S. State Department and the U.S. EPA have provided technical and financial support to the Kazakhstan government. Through this support and investments by the Kazakhstan government, several mercury projects have been funded. This paper provides information on the characterization and management of the mercury pollution at the Pavlodar Chemical Plant as well as some of the future plans.
