Description:

In 1986, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agen- cy`s Offices of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER), and the Office of Research and Develop- ment (ORD) established a technology research, dem- onstration, and evaluation program to promote the development and use of alternative and innovative technologies at Superfund sites. The program estab- lished is the Superfund Innovative Technology Evalu- ation, or SITE program; this program will help provide the treatment technologies necessary to implement new cleanup standards that require a greater reliance on permanent remedies at Superfund sites. The Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory, conducts the SITE Program in three areas: (1) a field-scale demon- stration program; (2) an emerging technologies devel- opment program; and (3) innovative technologies de- velopment within the EPA. The following article presents an overview of the SITE program. It is the first of several articles on the program that will be presented in 1989 in JAPCA. Subsequent articles will discuss selected specific pro- jects or unique aspects of the SITE program. The authors of the articles will be the EPA Project Manag- ers who are responsible for the project or the program area that is discussed. Readers who are interested in obtaining additional information on the SITE Program or on a specific project should contact the authors or the individuals listed as EPA contacts in the article.
