This workshop presentation begins with a discussion of the use of lime and other alkaline materials from the very earliest times to the present for killing bacteria, viruses and parasites and for controlling odors in wastewaters and sludge. It answers the question "How did EPA arrive at its definition of lime stabilization and what were its expectations for use of the process? Moving into the planning mode for an alkaline treatment system it considers in detail the following critical points: 1) How will the biosolids be used...in the field? 2) How are/should the biosolids be applied? 3) Onside/infield storage considerations, 4) Transport considerations, 5) Storage at the wastewater treatment plant, 6) Critical unit process operations of chemical addition, mixing, and (all before or after) dewatering (if dewatering is practiced), and 7) Selecting the alkaline material to be added and the optimum amount. Both the states' experience with lime/alkaline treatment of sludge and the suppliers perspectives will be given together with case studies/examples to illustrate their point.
