Impact/Purpose:
To describe the history of the US-German Bilateral Working Group and provide an overview of the jointly developed products in Phase III.
Description:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) entered into a Bilateral partnership in 1990 to study each country's efforts in developing and demonstrating innovative tools, techniques and approaches in areas related to contaminated land. The overall objective of the Bilateral is for each partner country to gain a comprehensive understanding of the other's tools, technique and approaches, to evaluate their effectiveness and finally transfer information when appropriate. The bilateral working group efforts are being implemented in a phased approach: during Phase 1,10 innovative treatment technologies at sites in the United States (U.S.) and Germany were evaluated according to U.S. and German protocols. Under Phase II, the EPA quality management protocols were reviewed and used to develop a German equivalent, the German Standard Procedures for the Evaluation of Remedial Technologies (the DETAD). An additional 10 technologies at sites in both countries were evaluated using these quality standards. The U.S. and Germany entered into a third phase of the Bilateral partnership to focus on an integrated approach to redeveloping contaminated sites. The U.S.-German Bilateral Working Group is completing this third phase and will initiate Phase IV in 2005. Phase IV will focus on sustainable land revitalization. The U.S.-German Bilateral Working Group has organized a variety of meetings, and workshops and has developed several products. This paper will first describe and discuss the history of the U.S.-German Bilateral Working Group and second provide an overview of the jointly developed products in Phase III.
