Description:

The report gives results of soil analysis laboratory work by the University of Florida in support of the Florida Radon Research Program (FRRP). Analyses were performed on soil and fill samples collected during 1992 by the FRRP Research House Program and the New House Evaluation Program (NHEP). Work included moisture, radium-226, and radon emanation coefficient determinations. During 1992, 164 samples representing 21 sites were analyzed. The cumulative 1991-92 data from 288 samples representing 75 sites were evaluated. For North Florida (Gainsville vicinity) NHEP sites, all but one site had low radioactivity (<1 pCi/g) fill: one site had moderately elevated (3 pCi/g) fill over low activity surficial substrate. In the first 0.9 m of substrate, most of the sites (76%) had <1 pCi/g, 22% had 1-10 pCi/g, and one site had 12 pCi/g. In 1992, the substrate between 0.8 and 1.8 m depth was also examined at 14 sites. Radium concentrations in the second depth increment ranged from <1 to 14 pCi/g with a greater percentage exceeding 2 pCi/g than in the first increment. Central Florida (Polk County) NHEP sites were characterized by elevated radioactivity fill (1 to 30 pCi/g) over a wide range of substrate concentrations (<1 to 69 pCi/g). Fill and soil from research house sites were generally representative of the NHEP construction sites within the respective regions.
