MODEL DEVELOPMENT FOR FY08 CMAQ RELEASE

Impact/Purpose:
The objectives of this task are to continue development and improvement of EPA's mesoscale (regional through urban scale) air quality modeling systems, such as the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model, as air quality management and NAAQS implementation tools. This task focuses on needed research and development of air quality models targeted for a major CMAQ model release in FY08. Model development for a broad scope of application is envisioned. For example, CMAQ will need to be able to simulate air quality feedbacks to meteorology and climate as well as intercontinental transport. The 2008 release of CMAQ is timed to coincide with EPA/OAR's and the states' needs for an improved model for assessments of progress (mid-course corrections) in the post-SIP submittal timeframe.
Description:
This task provides credible state of the art air quality models and guidance for use in implementation of National Ambient Air Quality Standards for ozone and PM. This research effort is to develop and improve air quality models, such as the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system, a multiscale and multi-pollutant chemistry-transport model (CTM). Specific research components include: meteorological modeling, land-surface and PBL modeling, gas phase mechanisms and solvers, cloud dynamics and aqueous chemistry, photolysis rates and radiative transfer model improvements, aerosol modeling, transport and diffusion, plume-in-grid approach, CMAQ code integration and efficiencies, and on-line integration of meteorology and atmospheric chemistry. Annual CMAQ modeling system releases are anticipated from this Task, incorporating new modeling science developments and modeling efficiencies each year, leading to a major CMAQ model system release in 2008. This task utilizes high performance computing and scientific visualization resources provided by EPA's National Environmental Scientific Computing Center (NESC2).

The most recent public release of the CMAQ model (Version 4.5 released in September 2005) has been improved in its scientific representation of several important processes including, convective clouds, aerosol dry deposition, aerosol thermodynamics, and mass conservation, and its capabilities have been expanded to include many hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), chlorine chemistry, and sea salt aerosols. The new release also includes two new diagnostic tools: sulfur tracking and carbon source apportionment. An overview of the new science, and extended capabilities in CMAQv4.5 (CMAQv4.5_ScienceUpdates.pdf) is available from the CMAS website (www.cmascenter.org) along with downloads of the CMAQ system and related programs such as SMOKE, MCIP, and PAVE.CMAQv4.5 has been evaluated by simulation of the entire year of 2001 for the continental US at 36 km grid resolution and a one-way nest to 12 km grid resolution for the eastern US. Relevance :EPA and the states are responsible for implementing the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for ozone and PM. New standards for 8-hr average ozone and annual average PM2.5 concentrations are in the process of initial implementation. State Implementation Plans (SIPs) will be due to EPA in the 2007-2008 timeframe. Revised air quality modeling to demonstrate progress will be needed starting around 2010. Air quality simulation models, such as CMAQ, are required components of the SIP analyses. The research performed in this task is designed to provide the necessary simulation capabilities for the CMAQ air quality model, and to keep the science in the model at the state-of-the-art. This model, used for research and regulatory applications by the EPA, states, and others must have current up-to-date science for the highest level of credibility for the regulatory decision-making process. Annual CMAQ modeling system releases are made directly to EPA's client office (OAQPS) as well as to the general public through the Community Modeling and Analysis System center.
