Impact/Purpose:

To better understand the mechanisms of inherited loss of vision

Description:

A manuscript examines the retinal changes in an avian model of inherited loss of vision. Avian models of eye diseases that affect humans have previously been identified. Characterizing the phenotype of the rge strain is a necessary step in determining whether the loss of vision present in this animal model is also present in humans. EPA assisted researchers at Michigan State University in designing tests of visual function and using appropriate analysis strategies. A better understanding of the mechanisms of inherited loss of vision can help us to understand potential targets of toxicant action.
