Description:

In early 12/93, a waterborne disease outbreak was identified in Gideon, MO. Initially 6-9 cases of diarrhoea were identified at a local nursing home. By 1/8/94, 31 cases with lbarotory confirmed salmonellosis had been identified. Seven nursing home residents exhibiting diarrhoeal illness died four of whom were culture confirmed. It ws estimated that about 44% of the 1104 residents, or almost 600 people, were affected with diarrhoea between 11/11 and 12/27/93. A system evaluation ws conducted in which a computer model (EPANET) was used to develop scenarios, to explain possible contaminant transport in the Gideon system. It was concluded, based on this analysis, that the outbreak resulted from bird contaminantion in a municipal water storage tank.
