Description:

Carbonyl sulfide (COS) was nominated to the National Toxicology Program for testing in 1996 due to emissions levels and a lack of data. Through an inter-agency collaboration, functional and electrophysiological endpoints were included in the studies. This manuscript describes brain lesions detected by pathology, magnetic resonance microscopy, and electrophysiology. Behavioral endpoints were less affected. This is the first report of brain lesions such as these produced by COS. These data may be useful in setting reference exposure levels by EPA.
